Adventures Geared Toward Developing Young Leaders
The GSTA Outdoor Academy
The Gold Star Teen Adventures (GSTA) Outdoor Academy is a comprehensive program that is designed to achieve the pillars of GSTA in wilderness settings. Teens will find their confidence through the numerous challenges that the outdoors have to offer, will develop leadership and teamwork skills, will learn the skills of an outdoorsman, and will make lifelong friendships with other teens that have shared the same experiences. The Outdoor Academy Adventures are held every summer, and hunts in the spring and fall. The main components of the program cover a broad range of skills. Our introductory adventure introduces teens to outdoor survival and camping fieldcraft, hiking, wilderness first aid, and paddling skills. Our more advanced Outdoor Academy adventures include training in wilderness first aid, swift water rescue, and paddling on moving water. Our outdoor academy also includes hunting adventures. Annual hunts include whitetail deer, turkey, and exotic animals.

Adventure 201
Franklin NC | JUNE 27th - JULY 2nd, 2025
Get ready for the excitement of the rapids! This will be a week of intense, hands-on activities that will focus on teaching participants how to manage real life river rescue situations that a paddler might experience using minimal equipment. The group and individuals will get real life scenarios to work through. Teens will also train on backcountry first aid skills and will earn an American Red Cross Wilderness and Remote First Aid and CPR certification, and an American Canoe Association Class IV Swift Water Rescue Certification.
This continues to be one of our most popular adventures, and prepares teens for more advanced GSTA Outdoor Academy paddling adventures!
The GSTA Scuba Academy
Our academy starts with our first scuba adventure, where teens are introduced to the wonders of the ocean. Teens become certified scuba divers through the National Association of Underwater Instructors (NAUI).
Teens will not only become certified but can also conduct numerous additional dives that will enhance their capabilities and confidence underwater.
The second component of the academy is a weeklong adventure that teaches NAUI Advanced Scuba Diver and Enriched Air Nitro Diver certifications. Here, teens will further advance their skills, learning to dive safely to deeper depths, conduct more advanced underwater navigation, dive in limited visibility, boat, and shore dive, and be introduced to wreck diving. In years past, GSTA has taught the advanced courses in Belize, Central America, Bonaire, Dutch Caribbean, and in the Grand Cayman Islands.
As divers gain the requisite skills, they will have the opportunity to challenge their underwater abilities as part of the GSTA Adventure Scuba. The GSTA Adventure Scuba is an exciting week of diving sunken ships and beautiful coral reefs while refining critical diving skills. Teens will be trained and will practice more advanced diving skills to include buoyancy control, navigation, gas consumption and surveying techniques for shipwrecks.
The final component of our diving academy is the NAUI Rescue Diver Certification. Here, teens will learn how to manage risks and effectively handle diving problems and emergencies, assisting and transporting divers as well as performing surface rescues and rescues from depth involving both boat and shore-based skin and scuba divers.
Like all of GSTA's programs, this entire experience is life-changing, and will help teens build confidence and develop skills that will benefit them throughout their lives.
